Veteran Services Commission Announces Planned Closure After Nearly a Decade of Volunteer Service
Founded in 2016 as a 100% volunteer-supported, zero-donation veteran service organization.
Spartanburg, South Carolina — The Veteran Services Commission Inc. announces its planned organizational closure after nearly a decade of service to veterans, families, and communities across Spartanburg and the State of South Carolina.
The organization was founded on a clear and disciplined mission. John W. Bryant, U.S. Army, Major (Ret.), approached Jermaine E. Whiteside with a vision to establish a veteran-centered 501(c)(3) nonprofit grounded in one principle: 100% giving. The intent was to create a mission-first organization where veterans could support one another without placing financial burden on those being served.
Jermaine E. Whiteside assisted in establishing the organization, supporting its early formation, governance structure, and public positioning. From its inception in 2016, the Veteran Services Commission operated through the volunteer service, personal resources, and sustained commitment of John W. Bryant and Jermaine E. Whiteside.
During its years of operation, the organization received no external donations and no outside financial support. Despite these constraints, the Veteran Services Commission served more than 250 veterans throughout Spartanburg and across South Carolina through community-based initiatives, volunteer coordination, and direct engagement.
As John W. Bryant retires once again—following a distinguished career as a military officer, entrepreneur, and defense contractor professional—he has made the decision to formally close the organization. The Commission concludes its work in the same spirit in which it was founded: as a 100% giving, veteran-focused mission rooted in service, dignity, and veterans helping veterans.
The Veteran Services Commission formally recognizes John W. Bryant as its Founder and honors his vision, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to those who served. The organization also recognizes Jermaine E. Whiteside for his role in supporting the formation, governance, and operational development of the organization.
As part of the closure process, the organization will update its website and public materials to preserve the historical record, ensure accuracy of leadership representation, and document the mission and impact of the organization for public reference.
Important clarification for public records and digital platforms:
John W. Bryant is the retired U.S. Army officer and Founder of the Veteran Services Commission. Jermaine E. Whiteside served in a civilian governance and organizational support capacity as a Board Member and is not a retired U.S. military officer.
The Veteran Services Commission closes with gratitude to every veteran, family member, volunteer, and community partner connected to its work. Its legacy affirms a foundational principle: meaningful service is not defined by funding, but by commitment, discipline, and a willingness to serve others.
